The first issue was made from 1927 until the end of 1949 and was offered with a 2.5", 4" and 6" barrel, with fixed sights, checkered walnut grips and a blued finish. The gun is numbered 224460, but it looks like whoever was stamping numbers the day it was made put 224660 on the bottom of the grip and then corrected the mistake by overstamping the first 6 with a 4. Bill Goforth's book H&R Arms Co 187-1986 states the M490 "Greenwing" was made 1978-'83, serial number should be on the left side of the frame under Harrington and Richardson Inc, preceded by a two letter alpha code starting with A, AS= 1978, AT= 1979, etc as shown in the link below.
